May 5, 2021 Update:
Mitch O'Farrell's amendment to our HCM nomination for Taix French Restaurant is custom-made to suit the developer's plans, saving bits and pieces of the restaurant, which will specifically allow them to avoid an environmental impact report (EIR) for their new 6-story behemoth project.
On May 4, the PLUM Committee approved this reckless motion, it now goes before the full City Council on June 2.
If this "historic designation" is approved, it will set a dangerous precedent with far-reaching consequences, as it will serve to undermine and weaken the Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM) program for the entire City of Los Angeles.
Please take a stand; say NO to Mitch's FAKE PRESERVATION PLAN, call his office and ask for the Land Use Deputy Craig Bullock 213-473-7013 or email craig.bullock@lacity.org and councilmember.ofarrell@lacity.org. Tell them to RESCIND the amendment, and that the designation should ONLY be approved as ORIGINALLY RECOMMENDED and UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED by the Cultural Heritage Commission, leaving Taix intact and allowing a redesigned project to be built elsewhere on this parcel, with full environmental review. Help Save Taix!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH,

About Taix
From its humble beginnings in the heart of Downtown LA’s Frenchtown in 1927, to its present-day Echo Park location since 1964, this essential neighborhood gathering spot has served amazing home-style French cuisine to Angelenos of all walks of life. Their 321 lounge is a favorite destination where locals and visitors alike congregate to drink, watch Dodger games, celebrate family events, and listen to comedy and live music. Taix is also the epicenter of the Echo Park Rising festival where the newest local bands debut.
Survey LA (the historic survey of Los Angeles) has identified Taix as a long-standing commercial presence in the community. In a rare move in 2012, the intersection in front of Taix was officially designated "Taix Square" by the City Council - very few restaurants receive this honor.
But Taix was recently sold to Washington State developers Holland Partner Group (HPG). Their misguided plan is to demolish the historic Taix building and replace it with a massive 6-story structure, where a modern version of Taix will be relegated to a small storefront. This proposal shows a lack of respect for our community and our history. Losing Taix would leave a deep void in the cultural fabric that holds our community together.
Our goal is to preserve the original structure and keep the restaurant intact. We believe the tract is large enough to incorporate new development while preserving Taix with innovative adaptive reuse. We want to be at the table ensuring the design process is fair and transparent. This requires an open mindset and creative solutions, but it can be done!
We look to Tom Bergin’s, Musso & Frank’s, Clifton’s, French Market on Santa Monica as iconic examples of LA's rich and diverse history. These institutions are more than a restaurant or a bar; they contribute to the fiber of our neighborhoods and the unique culture of the city.
We ask:
Councilman Mitch O'Farrell to support our historic nomination and give the community a voice in the plans for this site.
Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti and the Planning Department to enact the Legacy Business Program and add Taix to that list.
Holland Partner Group to leave Taix intact: the building, the lounge, the porte-cochère, the decor.
Michael Taix (owner of the restaurant) to help us guide Taix into the future, as a vibrant new historical landmark that remains at the heart of the neighborhood.
